Kell Brook says he’d beat Khan, wants to fight him

By Scott Gilfoid: Undefeated welterweight contender Kell Brook (27-0, 18 KO’s) figures he’s ready now to take on and defeat former IBF/WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) after beating 30-year-old fringe welterweight contender Matthew Hatton (42-6-2, 16 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision at the Motorpoint Arena, Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.

Brook said this about wanting to fight Khan as quoted by fightnews.com “I want Khan now. He thought Matthew [Hatton] was the better fighter and I proved him wrong, and I would smash Amir.”

Big deal, Brook beats Hatton; so what. Brook is making too much of his victory. It’s one thing beating a fringe contender like Hatton and quite another to take on a legitimate top 10 contender that isn’t just someone the sanctioning body gave a high ranking to due to an inflated record of mostly B and C level opponents. If Brook had actually beaten someone good instead of Hatton, I could see him spouting off at the mouth and calling out Khan, but getting lippy after a win over Hatton?

Come on, Brook, you can do better than that, can’t you? How about fighting someone good for a change? I’d be happy to see Brook fight at least one legitimate top five contender, and I’m not talking some poor shmuck that the has been placed in the top five by one of the sanctioning bodies. We see that kind of thing all the time with some guy getting ranked in the the top five after being nothing but 2nd and 3rd tier opponents. I want to see Brook finally face someone good in his weight class. Khan is a light welterweight, so I can’t care that Brook is calling him out. Brook should call out someone like Victor Ortiz, Andre Berto or Mike Jones.
