By Jim Dower: Welterweight contender Omar Chavez (28-1, 20 Ko’s) rebounded from his disappointing loss in his last fight against Jorge Paez Jr. last December to come last night to stop Emilio Julio Julio (28-8-2, 13 KO’s) in the 9th round at the Palenque de Gallos, Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico.
Chavez, 22, the son of former boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez Sr., wore the 32-year-old Julio down with a combination head and body attack. Chavez needs a lot of work before he’ll be ready for bigger fights than this.
In undercard action, unbeaten World Boxing Association (WBA) flyweight champion Roman Gonzalez (26-0, 16 KO’s) made short work on his opponent Manuel Jimenez (11-3-1, 7 KO’s) by a 1st round TKO win. Gonzalez put Jimenez down on one knee in the first and the fight was then halted.
