By Eric Thomas: A fight between former three division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez (53-6-1, 39 KO’s) and former WBA World lightweight champion Brandon Rios (29-0-1, 22 KO’s) is a possibility for July 14th if both fighters get through their next fights both on April 14th in different venues. According to RingTV, if the 38-year-old Marquez and 25-year-old Rios win their next fights, then they could meet up at the Cowboys Stadium on July 14th in a pay-per-view bout.
First, however, Rios must beat #1 WBA lightweight contender Richard Abril (17-2-1, 8 KO’s) in their fight for the vacant WBA World lightweight title on April 14th at the Mandalay Bay Resort & Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. As for Marquez, he has a fight coming up on the same night against #5 WBO light welterweight contender Serhiy Fedchenko (30-1, 13 KO’s) for the interim World Boxing Organization light welterweight title at the New Mexico City Arena, Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico. The fight will involve Marquez stepping up a division to take the fight. However, Marquez recently fought WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao last November in a losing effort but many boxing fans thought Marquez fought well enough to deserve a 12 round decision. He certainly looked both bigger and stronger than Pacquiao on that night. If Marquez can come into the fight against Fedchenko as strong as he was against Pacquiao, then this should be a fairly easy fight for Marquez.
Bob Arum of Top Rank told RingTV “Marquez against Rios, yes, that’s a possibility for July 14 at Cowboys Stadium if they both win their fights. Marquez is in a good fight against the Russian guy [Fedchenko], and we’ll bring that to Mexico, where it will be a sold out house I think.”
The Marquez-Fedchenko fight could be interesting if Fedchenko doesn’t fight in his usual punch and immediately back up style of fighting.
