By Scott Gilfoid: Unbeaten talent Andre Ward (25-0, 13 KO’s) isn’t pleased that IBF super middleweight champion Lucian Bute opted to not take part in the Super Six tournament when he had the chance to in 2009 when the tourney started up. While Ward was working his backside off beating one top level fighter after another in the Super Six tournament, Bute was taking the soft cushy path beating the likes of Jesse Brinkley, Brian Magee, Jean-Paul Mendy and Edison Miranda. For that reason, Ward has decided to let Bute show that he deserves a fight against him by beating a top level fighter.
It’s unfortunate that Bute has picked a fighter like Froch to fight next on May 26th rather than someone fighting well like Andre Dirrell and his brother Anthony Dirrell. Froch was already beaten in his last fight against Ward last December and beaten not long before that against Mikkel Kessler. I mean, what does Bute prove in beating a guy that was already exposed in the Super Six tournament? It’s a wrong move, but Ward will still likely give Bute a chance to prove himself if he looks good against Froch in May.
Ward said on his twitter “The guy [Bute] from Canada had a chance to fight in the Super Six. He opted out!! So, him wanting to fight all of a sudden doesn’t move me. That being said, I hope he wins his next [against Froch] fight, so we can give the fans what they want to see.”
I agree with Ward. Bute had the chance and didn’t enter into the Super Six tournament. Ward was the one that had to knock off the difficult names, while Bute sat back and beat fringe contenders and/or fighters that had hugely inflated rankings.
