Sergio Martinez needs to downsize his ambitions

By Allan Fox: WBC Diamond middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (49-2-2, 28 KO’s) feels he deserves to take on the best fighters in the middleweight, junior middleweight and the welterweight divisions given his immense talent that he’s displayed again and again in the last three years. However, Martinez is in a position where he may a little too good for his opposition and he’s got few takers willing to try their luck against the hard hitting southpaw knockout artist.

Martinez took care of Matthew Macklin by stopping him in the 11th round last Saturday night in New York’s Madison Square Garden. Martinez made it look easy once he got a full head of steam. He now wants to fight Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto, Saul Alvarez and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. However, Martinez isn’t likely to get any of them no matter what catchweight he agrees to squeeze down to or what purse split that he gives them. He’s just too dangerous and will be ignored by them. Since we’re now looking at Martinez without a significant big named opponent for the remainder of 2012, I’d like to list who Martinez will likely end up facing next.
