Mayweather will reveal Cotto’s deterioration

By Dan Ambrose: WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto has been put on the safe path by his former promoter Bob Arum ever since Cotto suffered a beating and 12th round stoppage loss to Manny Pacquiao in 2009. At the time, Cotto looked to be showing serious signs of being a shot fighter. However, Arum basically took Cotto off the market by putting him in with three consecutive soft opponents to make believers out of some of the fans who saw Cotto’s opposition as being great.

Cotto is now taking on Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his first serious fight in three years against a guy that’s not old or injured like some of his last three opponents were at the time he fought them. I don’t know what Cotto can do in this fight because the natural conclusion of match like this is Cotto taking a beating a getting stopped. You don’t take a fading fighter and put him in with a fighter like Mayweather without bad things happening.

It’s going to go badly for Cotto unless he can close his eyes and connect with one of his big swings right on the chin of Mayweather. I don’t see that happening because Mayweather really has his number in this fight. It’s a big mismatch and things are going to fall apart quickly for Cotto on May 5th.
